Twenty-One

The group of twenty-one people walked ever closer to the open gates of Bleakrock, a sight Lily had never seen in all her years. She stared at the walls, noting the incredible detail on them, as well as the perfect uniformity of the square stone the wall had been crafted from. As they cautiously stepped through the huge metal entrance, she gratefully realized she wasn't the only one looking around in curiosity and concern.

Her senses were going haywire, unable to rectify the utterly alien shift between her world and this one. The stark contrast between the organic chaos of the Wyld she had lived in her entire life, compared to the meticulous, ordered world within the city-state of Bleakrock made her stomach churn. The terrain had been altered completely, turned into something completely unnatural for the island. Firstly, after stepping through the gates of the wall, they found themselves in a vast, open space… with yet another wall between them and the actual city.

They were in a no man's land, a flat, stone space hinting at a community constantly prepared for war. Lily shook her head and murmured, perhaps too loud, “Why… why is there a fortress like this on Canu Moch, of all places? What are they protecting, or hiding?”

A plate mail-bedecked guard clattered toward them, a long halberd clutched in one hand being used as an impromptu walking stick. Lily swept her gaze over him, at first internally ridiculing the man for such an unnecessary, practically useless set of gear. Then, with a queasy feeling in her gut, she realized perhaps armor such as this wasn't as impractical outside of the forest. In fact, in an open space, his weapon would likely be far more devastating than the short swords favored in the woods. If he didn't need to constantly be moving on uneven terrain, or be concerned with sinking into mud-

“You there!” The guard shoved a gauntleted finger at her. “Keep sizing me up like that, and I'm going to think you’re a troublemaker. You don't want me to think that about you, no matter how dangerous you might be. We just met, after all. Are you the Scout assigned to this group?”

More than anything, Red was taken aback by the seriousness with which she was being regarded. All her life, she’d been dealing with people teasing her or outright ignoring her, due to her stature. Yet, here, as soon as she stepped foot within the walls, the guard immediately realized she was not only dangerous, but in charge of the large group.

Frankly… she was flattered.

“I was. Having successfully and safely arrived, I hereby discharge my duty and turn over the safety of these Coastals to the city-state of Bleakrock. Do you accept this duty?”

“I, Captain Cliff of Bleakrock, accept these refugees and agree to take responsibility for them in the short term, until they have been informed of the rules and assigned housing.” The man replied back to her just as formally, seeming to be put at ease by her professionalism.
